Background of the Study
Traditional dance performances in Nigeria are rich in cultural expression, often accompanied by intricate drumming that conveys both rhythm and meaning. This study focuses on phonetic nuances in Yoruba drumming within traditional dance contexts. Drumming patterns involve subtle variations in tone, tempo, and articulation that serve as non-verbal communication cues. These phonetic elements are essential for conveying emotions, cultural narratives, and ceremonial significance (Adeniyi, 2023). By comparing recordings from different dance performances, this study examines how phonetic nuances vary according to regional styles and performance contexts. The research employs acoustic analysis and ethnographic observation to document the detailed sound patterns in Yoruba drumming. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of how phonetic features in music and dance reinforce cultural identity and facilitate social cohesion, while also adapting to modern influences in performance art (Chinwe, 2024; Okeke, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the central role of drumming in Yoruba traditional dance, there is limited research on the phonetic nuances that characterize these performances. Existing studies tend to focus on rhythmic and cultural aspects rather than on the detailed phonetic articulation of drum sounds (Adeniyi, 2023). This gap hampers our understanding of how subtle phonetic variations contribute to the overall impact of the performance. Without systematic analysis, the processes by which traditional drumming adapts to modern influences remain underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by examining the phonetic details of Yoruba drumming in dance, thereby offering insights into cultural preservation and performance evolution (Chinwe, 2024).
